Sun Air's Legacy

Sun Air has been an integral part of Fiji's tourism industry for more than 20 years, helping it grow and opening new destinations in the process. These now service the needs of many markets, including visitors to 5 star luxury, family, budget and special interest Resorts, corporate and business traveller's and those visiting friends and relatives. There are more than 330 Islands in the Fiji group, and nearly an equal number of places those visitors can stay.

While Sun Air began in 1981 in response to the needs of tourist traveller's, the airline now carries about 60 percent visitors and 40 percent local people. This mix has proved very successful, as many passenger services would otherwise be uneconomical if catering only to one side of the market. Sun Air, carries more passengers, travels more passenger-kilometres and realises greater returns than any other domestic carrier in the region.

The airline's main hub is Nadi International Airport, where it offers connections to and from international air services. Its second hub is Nausori Airport ( or Suva ) , which is increasing in importance as an international destination.

Sun Air operates scheduled flights between 10 destinations. The company has 11 aircraft, a staff of 120 people, regional offices in Honolulu, Los Angeles, Sydney, and Auckland.

In short, Sun Air has come a long way from the single aircraft flown by owner Don Collingwood that fed tourists to Malololailai and Taveuni 20 years ago. This progress can be linked to the expanding interest in Fiji as a tourism destination and the requirement for new services and aircraft.

As with any modern organisation, Sun Air places great value on its staff. Sun Air has thrived with a policy of recruitment and promotion based on merit. Every opportunity is given to employees to undertake further training where it may advance their skills base particularly in the areas of engineering, safety, flight operations, and customer services.
